Personality: Jonathan is the epitome of an English gentleman. The sort of man who is willing to extend a hand and a gentle smile to any stranger he meets, he is always one to pride himself in his appearance. He is certainly not vain about it, however, more that he wants people to see him as an upstanding man. Because of this, he approaches being friendly in a genuine way, and he wants to assume the best in others. This does sometimes make him ignore red flags, even if he sees them, because he wants to assume that, as long as they aren’t overly evil, that they mean well.

He is also a soft hearted man in general. While he is determined, he wears his fear on his sleeve and will not even attempt to hide his terror if he feels it strongly enough, and admits to weeping when in deep sorrow. He is also a fan of romantic activities, finding solace in a nice walk in the countryside or a beautiful night sky. He is a full romantic and finds absolutely no shame in any of these mannerisms.

He is also traditional to a fault, due to his Victorian gentlemanly lifestyle. It is especially evident in how he sees Mina. He adores her with all his heart, but he becomes deeply concerned when she tries to help stop Dracula, and gently tries to keep her away from danger despite her insistence that she wants to help. Even when the team’s decision to not tell MIna all the details gets her cursed by Dracula, Jonathan still hesitates to have her help out, and is upset when she wants to travel to Transylvania to help kill Dracula. While he is eventually convinced to let her come, it is clear that he struggles with the idea of breaking from traditional gender roles.

Due to his upbringing, Jonathan is vastly studious. He is someone who finds great pleasure in learning and reading. He is absolutely amazed when he finds Dracula’s expansive library and it seemed like most of his early days before the horror crept in were spent reading the books of the library. And even before then, he mentions teaching himself German and learning about the local history of Romania just so he could have a better understanding of his business trip. After he gets home, he devotes much of his time to researching where each of Dracula’s coffins are so they can properly destroy them. In general, he is the sort of person who will tirelessly work to be well informed on any situation, both in minor and drastic situations.

He is fiercely loyal to anyone he loves enough, to an almost dangerous degree. He will stop at nothing to protect those he cares about even if they don’t want to be protected. He was the only one to try to get out of agreeing to Mina’s wish to kill her if she turns into a vampire, and he never truly agrees to the promise. He also makes his own secret promise to turn himself into a vampire should Mina turn. This was well after Jonathan risked dying to keep Dracula’s wives from turning him into a vampire, seeing as death would be a better fate. But he still makes the promise to be turned, because to him there was no greater pain than forcing Mina to fend for herself as a soulless vampire.

Jonathan’s strongest trait is far and away his determination. Even in his darkest hour, he is not the sort of person to fully give up, even if he is pretty sure that pushing on could kill him. He scales walls over sheer cliffs in order to attempt to find an escape, and does it again and runs into woods with man eating wolves, knowing full well he’s likely to die, only for a faint chance of escaping. His determination also extends to his protection over Mina, where he openly admits to being willing to sell his soul to the devil in order to protect her. While he is apparently talked out of it, Jonathan by this point is aware that supernatural beings exist and that demons could likely exist as well, so it would not be a claim to be made lightly.

While he's kind hearted, and someone who prides himself on being a proper gentleman, he becomes absolutely vindictive if someone crosses him or anyone he cares about. He is not afraid to physically harm people who have wronged him, such as attacking Dracula with a shovel, and he works towards defeating Dracula after he recovered from his amnesia. But if you hurt someone he cares about, he will stop at nothing until he gets his revenge. After Mina gets cursed by Dracula, a switch practically flips within Jonathan to make him into a man dead set on destroying Dracula, even to his own detriment. He openly talks about how he wants to send Dracula to Hell himself, and when it came time to murder him, he shows absolutely no hesitation as he slices his throat. He doesn’t care if he gets blood on his hands as long as he believes that he has avenged those he cares about. This does not take away from his kind heart, because deep down he would be certainly happy if he never had to kill again, but when people hurt him and those close to him, he thinks it’s the morally right thing to make sure they get what they deserve.

As a Victorian gentleman, he has a flair for the dramatics. His journal entries are long and verbose, and he will go on dramatic tangents such as describing the sort of woman who used to inhabit a bedroom, or about the dastardly plans Dracula must have when he finds his clothes missing. This is exemplified in the above mentioned paragraphs about his wish that God lets him send Dracula to Hell, and how he would sell his soul to the devil for Mina. Jonathan simply does not know how to say anything without going all out.
